Curriculum-based Programming

Upstream is proud to have funding to support substance use prevention, mental health promotion, suicide prevention, and skill building curriculums during the school-day or in structured settings. Currently, Upstream has funding available to partner with your organization to support implementation of the following curricula. Al's Pals - 3 to 8 years old

This research-informed and evidence-based program provides young children with the skills to prepare for life’s challenges through interactive lessons, engaging puppets, original music, and impactful teaching approaches. Al’s Pals is offered for children ages 3-6 years old, ideal for preschool and kindergarten level. This program also includes easy 10-15 minute lessons with parent follow up letters to communicate what has been discussed and implemented.


By participating in Al’s Pals, children will learn about:

  • Managing their feelings and behaviors
  • Cultivating conflict resolution and problem-solving skills
  • Building positive relationships & preventing bullying
  • Creating caring, cooperative classrooms
  • Making healthy choices
  • Building authentic family partnerships

Botvin’s LifeSkills Training - 3rd to 12th grade

Evidence-based substance abuse and violence prevention program that is uniquely designed to be flexible and interactive. The LST program has been extensively tested and proven effective at reducing tobacco, alcohol, opioid, and illicit drug use by as much as 80%. Long-term follow-up studies also show that it produces prevention effects that are durable and long-lasting. This program is for elementary, middle, and high school students.


By participating in LST, participants will learn about:

  • Making healthy choices
  • Benefits of avoiding drugs and alcohol
  • Useful prevention information based on grade level

Hazelden’s Lifelines - 5th to 12th grade

Program that consists of full comprehensive prevention, intervention, and postvention tactics to educate youth about suicide and suicide prevention. It consists of detailed lessons, plans, videos, and role-playing segments. This allows students to be prepared on the next steps if a crisis arises.


By participating in Lifelines, participants will learn about:

  • Building knowledge and skills to prevent suicide
  • Helping students at risk for suicide
  • Responding to suicide and other traumatic death


*Based on school-wide implementation, but can also be used as a component to any community based programs, such as Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Boys and Girls Clubs of America

Signs of Suicide - Middle/High School

This program teaches students how to identify signs of depression and suicide in themselves and others. One class session with additional content for multiple sessions if interested. There is both a middle school and high school version for this program.


By participating in Signs of Suicide training, participants will learn how to:

  • Explain ACT (Acknowledge signs of suicide. Show you care. Tell a trusted adult)
  • Identify warnings signs of suicide
  • Identify trusted adults who can help


* The cost of this program ranges from $300-$495, 1 license per building
**SOS training can be completed in one class period

Sources of Strength - Elementary, Middle, and High School

This program is a universal suicide prevention designed to build socioecological protective influences around youth and to reduce the likelihood that vulnerable youth will become suicidal. Mission is to provide the highest quality evidence-based prevention for suicide, violence, bullying and substance use by training, supporting, and empowering both peer leaders and caring adults to impact their world through the power of connection, hope, help and strength. This program is offered to elementary, middle, and high school students as well as adults.


By participating in Sources of Strength, participants will:

  • Increase youth-adult connectedness
  • Increase in peer leader’s school engagement
  • Increase positive perceptions of adult support for suicidal youth and the acceptability of
    seeking help
