Discover ATLAS

Join us to be a shining light in the darkness of grief.

ATLAS consists of individuals who have lost someone to suicide at least 18 months ago and volunteer their time to provide support, a connection to resources, and an installation of hope to those experiencing the (often) unexpected death of a loved one by suicide

ATLAS is:

  • Volunteer-led, relying on individuals who have lost a loved one to suicide, combined with a passionate volunteer or mental health professional,
  • An immediate source of comfort for individuals impacted by suicide
  • A reminder that you are not alone on this team that no one wants to join.

ATLAS is NOT:

  • crisis-intervention team, if you're worried about someone or having suicidal thoughts, please call 911 or the Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255)
  • group therapy or support group team

  • Individual grief therapy or support for individuals

Case Study

Impact of a LOSS Team on Survivors

Suicide Postvention describes the support provided to those who have lost someone to suicide. Although postvention occurs after a death by suicide, it is preventive in that it reduces suicide risk by identifying and supporting the emotional and mental health needs of the survivors. These supports may include Local Outreach to Suicide Survivor Team (such as ATLAS), Support Groups (such as Hope & Healing), as well as one on one professional and peer support.

"I've lost two loved ones to suicide. Having the HOPE Team provide support after the second made all the difference." - Janet

In Southern Indiana, a Local Outreach to Suicide Survivor Team called the HOPE Team exists. As one of the few in Indiana, much of the "lessons learned" have been gleamed from their efforts, as well as from the supports and guidance put together by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.

"We see firsthand the number of deaths due to suicide and find it alarming the problem continues to grow. We are committed to making sure ATLAS is activated by our team for deaths by suicide, with the hopes that one day the Team will no longer be needed."
