Peer Led Support Groups
Upstream strives to be community led and driven, especially when it comes to utilizing individuals with lived experience to lead various peer-led support groups. Below is a bit of information about several groups operated by Upstream staff and volunteers under the Upstream umbrella.
Alternatives to Suicide (Alt2Su)
Alternatives to Suicide (Alt2Su) is a harm-reduction approach for support groups and conversations around suicide, first developed by the Wildflower Alliance in 2008.
In Alternatives to Suicide groups, people can talk about anything, including thoughts of wanting to die, without fear of being forced into treatment or involuntary hospitalization. No one will conduct a risk assessment, call the police or crisis team, or take any other involuntary action based on what is shared. Participants are encouraged to speak from their own experience by using “I” statements and will only be offered advice if they ask for it. This approach helps people explore the context of their experiences with suicide and their reasons for wanting to die to work on changing how they relate to their thoughts, emotions, and circumstances.
